WASHED PROCESS | CLEAN & SWEET | TEA-LIKE BODY
Finca La Amistad sits in the green hills of Coto Brus, southern Costa Rica, near the Panamanian border and the forests of La Amistad International Park. Roberto Montero is the fourth generation of his family to care for this land, where coffee has been grown for more than a century. In 1989, he began the long work of converting the farm to organic production—rebuilding the soil, planting shade trees, and creating a thriving habitat around every coffee parcel.
That commitment reaches through every step of production. The coffee is fully washed and milled on the farm, with stream-fed hydropower running the operation and coffee-processing byproducts returning to the fields as compost. Finca La Amistad is certified organic and Smithsonian Bird Friendly. Royal Coffee identifies it as the only Bird Friendly-certified estate in Costa Rica.
Bird Friendly certification means more than simply “shade-grown.” Certified farms meet rigorous standards for organic agriculture, tree-canopy coverage, native-tree diversity, foliage layers, habitat protection, and zero deforestation. By keeping a diverse canopy standing over working coffee land, Finca La Amistad protects wildlife habitat, stores carbon, and helps create a more climate-resilient farm.
This batch is clean, sweet, and beautifully delicate. Juicy honeydew leads into the bright red-fruit and gentle tea-like character of raspberry tea. It is a welcoming, balanced coffee that becomes more interesting with every sip.
Roaster’s Reserve: Curated by Marie Marsh
This coffee is part of our Roaster’s Reserve series—a limited collection personally selected and roasted by our head roaster, Marie Marsh. For each release, Marie also chooses a song that adds another layer to the experience: not a literal pairing, but a soundtrack for the feeling of the coffee.
Marie’s pick for Finca La Amistad:
“This Sky” — The Derek Trucks Band
“I love this song. The first time I heard it, I was driving through Big Sur, and the whole experience felt almost ethereal. It made me feel free and genuinely happy—and, as cheesy as it may sound, like I was floating through the landscape like a bird.
“The melodies and instrumentals have the same delicate quality as this coffee. They’re sweet, smooth, and beautifully mellow.
“‘This Sky’ is ultimately about holding onto hope and choosing freedom and love. That feels inseparable from the ethics of this coffee. I hope people feel good drinking it—not only because it’s beautiful in the cup, but because choosing Bird Friendly coffee is one small, meaningful way to help protect the habitats birds depend on.”
— Marie Marsh, Head Roaster
